Thanks you great folks!

Thanks Greg, looking forward to your report on how she sounds but i'll predict that she'll sound sweet!

Thanks Tom, i could not agree more, very clear and concise teaching!

Thanks Anthony , yeah, ran out of the stuff 3 days ago my brother, i really gotta get to the grocery, thanks!

Anthony...i did it again... i'll be sarting another thread I should have known better

Thanks Rich buddy, you're gonna love it too, if you go the Lee Valley, the box costs around $50 but you'll have a supply for a very long time.

Thanks Doug! Not really a surprise since i told him last year that i was going to build him a guitar in the future but he just doesn't know when he'll have it, i'll try to surprise him when he least expects it to arrive or receive! He lives far from here and doesn't call much so it might help me surprise him in a sense. He sure loves country music, especially bluegrass.

       Definitely.... not.... manly!!!

I like the idea of using veneer. I've seen popsicle sticks, spruce stock and bias tape but not veneer. I guess one could use my idea of using bands of built up masked epoxy too!

I think the veneer really looks good against the light sides!

Rod: Thanks for the link to the motor disk sander. That wouldn't have to be dedicated desk space would it?

Hey Billy it deffinatly doesn't require dedicated space.

Following Mike's little tutorial, this is a pretty easy jig to build, and modify the motor mounting as well. I made my drive pully out of maple, than I used plati-dip for the grip coating but it didn't work so well. I think I will put a strip of 80 grit on it instead, that should work fine.

But it did work very well, sanded the rim really easily and quick.

Here are a couple of quick pics I took yesterday.

And the back after sanding, ready for linings.

Hesh, i think this is doable with these veneers, just a few strokes of 80 grits sandpaper for the width and depth needed and bingo! Could be done to the kerfed linings prior to bending them. Or what if the veneers are just touching the kerfed linings on both sides, the linings already provide some sort of protection, right?

I'm wondering here if the entire side could not be laminated with these thin veneers, with the grain of the veneers running at 90 degrees with the grain of the sides since the veneers come in wide sheets hum? that would be a very thin protection alongthe entire side now wouldn't it?

Serge, remember the threads where we talked about double sides? To me, it would be the same concept.

The guitar is looking great by the way. I'm excited for you. Can't wait to hear and see it when it's done.

Serge,

I'm finally catching up on some of these threads, and just got a look at your work here. It's looking really good! Very much like a guitar.    I bet it's going to sound like one, too...a very good one!

BTW, concerning veneer side supports and kerfed linings...how about if you butt the lining up to the veneer, then glue a separate section of lining over the veneer? It seems like once the top and back are glued on the whole thing would behave as a continuous, cohesive unit.
Here are a couple of quick pics I took yesterday.
Thanks for the pix Rod! The only thing I would be troubled by is getting....something.... caught in between the drive wheel and the plate! Yeowwzzy!!
Gotta protect your .........never mind.......
"Dedicated space" is eliminated by the center bolt! Cool!

Carlton: I think what Hesh was pointing out was if a crack develops that would be a likely place. I guess bending veneer over the kerfing would also be an alternative. Bias tape maybe has the advantage, it's just the veneer looks more cool!

I may well be wrong, but it seems like the veneer would act very much like bias tape in stopping cracks, as long as the veneer is applied cross-grain and tucked under the lining. So instead of modifying the linings to fit the veneer, why not just glue the linings over the veneer? If the linings are butted up to the veneer and then continue over the veneer it should behave as a continuous unit. A possible downside might be that the extra thickness could compromise vibration, but we're not talking about much extra there--just however deep the veneer is.

I'm just speculatin' here, so any comments are certainly welcome.

Carlton, i'll have to measure the thickness of the veneers but i'd say in the range of 1 /32" so not much problems to affect vibrations if applied the way you describe IMHO, i think we're on to something here!

Hesh,

Have you tried getting Lacey to draw lines down the sides in between the linings with a marker pen and "daring" any cracks to cross them I'm going to get the "girls" to try this for me.

Serge - the guitar is looking great bro

Looking good, Serge. What is the top? It looks kind of dark next to the ash. Is this one #3 or 4?
